Court Observations

How often must you visit court?

You are required to attend court at least twice while you are studying this course.

We recommend you attend court as often as you can. Those who attend court often are more confident in their assignment writing and are better prepared for Practicum. Make the most of your time on your court visits, ask questions, see as much as you can.

There are 2 court observation worksheets to complete. You can complete and submit the observations in any order that you like but you must complete both worksheets.

You can undertake these court observations at any time, however you must submit your first observation on or before the Assignment One due date. Your second observation must be submitted on or before the Assignment Two due date. Look at the Course Calendar for these due dates. Submit your observations to judicialtrainer@jpfed.org.nz.

Your visit should be arranged through your mentor and your JP Association Court Panel Manager who will seek the approval of the Court Manager and Registrar.

Advice and instructions for court visits

Read the advice and instructions on each court observation form, prior to undertaking the observations.

You must not sit at the bench as a second or third Justice. You are not authorised to do so until you have completed training to the satisfaction of the Chief District Court Judge.
