Welcome to Judicial Studies, and congratulations on your endorsement by your JP Association for the Judicial Studies programme.

E te Kaiwhakawa Tumatanui e hiahia ki te whai matauranga i roto i tenei akoranga mo te ture, tena koe. Whaia te matauranga hei oranga mou, kia whakarato koe i te hapori i roto i te whare koti. Kia manawanui.

To each Justice of the Peace wishing to undertake the Judicial Studies course, greetings. Pursue this learning to increase your own knowledge and to enable you to serve the community by sitting in the court. Be determined to succeed.

This course is the first of three stages in your training: upon successful completion you will attend a two-day practical course at a District Court which is commonly known as 'the practicum'; then if you are successful at the practicum you will be admitted to your court panel. Your JP Association will ensure you are mentored throughout your training and your early court practice.

This online course provides the background to court duties and provides practical ways for you to increase your learning beyond just reading, as well as stimulating your thinking and understanding. The practicum and ongoing mentoring are the practice of your new skills.

As you may be aware, all training for Justices to carry out judicial duties must be completed to the satisfaction of the Chief District Court Judge under section 3B(1) of the Justices of the Peace Act 1957. The Chief District Court Judge has approved the content of this course, and oversees the practicum.

We are confident of your success in this course, the practicum, and in court, and we look forward to working with you. You will have close contact with the Royal Federation Professional Development Advisor and your Association mentor, both of whom will ensure you are well supported in your learning.

Go to 'Course Overview' on the left of the screen and read through all the information before you start the course. Make sure you have also read all the information provided to you in the Royal Federation website as well.
